Entire process of paid promotion of a product or service is what falls under a process called Search Engine Marketing. Websites who want to rank first on a search engine’s page pays the search engine a certain amount.

When you go to an offline store and ask the person there to show you the best led TV, it first shows you Panasonic TV. Ever wondered why? It is because Panasonic has told the person to first show his TVs and then other TVs and in return he will give him 5% of every sale. That means Panasonic goes for paid promotion of his product. This example can be applied to online also. So now you understand when you search for any product why does Amazon and Flipkart appear as the first 2 links. It because they also pay some amount to Google for displaying them as first 2 links.

Any form of advertising using a search engine is termed as Search Engine Marketing. SEO is carried out for better organic page ranking, while Search Engine Marketing is nothing but paying the search engine to feature you at the top of the search page.

While SEO allows you to optimize your website for a greater chance in appearing higher in search results, and online advertising allows you to send promotional content to the target audience of your choosing, SEM combines both benefits as your content is both optimized for higher search rankings and is placed primarily in front of audiences who are most likely to convert when they click on your ads.

What components does SEM include?

Companies bid for keywords that Google or Bing browsers use to appear their ads in the first page of the search results. These ads are often known as pay-per-click ads. It is very powerful because it shows your ad as the first link in the search engine which gives you a chance over others to click it and buy from your website. No other medium can do this, that is the reason why Search Engine Marketing is so powerful and effective.

Search engines have reserved slots for advertisements. For eg., whenever you search on Google – “buy best shoes”, the first 2-3 search results maybe ads from either Amazon, Flipkart or Jabong. These ads appear because of Search Engine Marketing.
